Diego has a passion for life and adventure. He has paddled professionally for over ten years in Canada, Peru, Brazil, Czech Republic, Korea and Ecuador. Diego studied geology and gave kayak classes in a university in Ecuador. He headed the Ecuadorian National Team in the Whitewater Rafting World Cup in Prague, Czech Republic in 2003 and in Inje, South Korea in 2007. Diego is part of the IRF (International Rafting Federation) and ACA (American Canoe Association) where he was trained in whitewater techniques as well as safety and rescue courses.
Diego worked for the Ecuador Tourism Ministry developing a guide for water adventure sports in Ecuador and is a trainer for the new Barefoot pathfinders that will lead your way. How everything started:
Diego's passion for nature and outdoor activities made him study geology, which lead his way to explore the unexplored, search and investigate. Soon after he joined the climbing club of his university, where he learnt new climbing techniques to reach further and climbed Cotopaxi, Chimborazo, Altar, Cayambe, Ilinizas to name a few. Then he started trainning in the art of river running and travel around the world to acquire more knowledge and practice in rafting and kayaking. At the same time he was inspired to build his own business observing how successfull adventure companies operate all over the world and getting insights into team building, staff training, footage and editing. On this journey Diego learnt English, French, and Portuguese. All of these habilities made him start Barefoot Expeditions in 2003 with nothing more than his kayak and his paddle. Since then, Barefoot Expeditions has made a considerable development to one of Ecuador's top adventure travel companies cooperating with GAP Adventures or Adventure Life. Being a pathfinder, his aim is constantly offering new adventures off the typical tourist tracks to show you Ecuador from a different point of view. We invite you to join us and experience freedom!

Kerstin was born and raised in Germany and has always been a passionate traveller. She came to Ecuador for the first time in 1999 during her studies and immediately fell in love with the country! She is based in Ecuador since 2009 after having travelled about 7 months through South America (Perú, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Brazil). She holds a degree in European Business Studies and has plenty of sales experience in the luxury cosmetics industry and in tourism. Kerstin speaks fluent English, Spanish and German.
Kerstin is responsible for the area of Marketing & Sales at Barefoot Expeditions and will be your direct contact for your travel inquiries. Her strength is answering all your emails and questions about travelling in Ecuador very patiently and extremely quickly.
Her priority is giving you an impeccable customer service as well as attention to detail in assisting you in planning your perfect vacation. She will work out the perfect itinerary for you according to your individual needs and personal budget.
What she especially enjoys about her job at Barefoot Expeditions is working on new exciting itineraries, communicating with national and international agencies and last but not least the personal contact to our clients to help them in spending a wonderful and unforgettable time in Ecuador!
In her freetime she loves travelling and enjoys cooking and baking, good movies and books and nice trekking tours all over Ecuador.

 César Romero works as Multisport Guide (rafting, biking, trekking) and bike mecanic for Barefoot Expeditions since 2006. He is a naturalist guide with a strong passion for nature and his country in general. He went by bike all over Ecuador and he loves to kayak in Ecuador´s rivers. César enjoys getting to know people from all over the world and always gives 100 % to fully satisfy his clients´ expectations on his tours.

 David loves nature, being outdoors, bird watching, extreme adventures and having fun. He studies tourism at Universidad Internacional in Quito. During an internship at a lodge in the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, he met Diego Altamirano and developed his love for water adventures. Soon after his internship, he took the safety kayaking and rafting guide course with Diego as his instructor. For about 1,5 years he is already passionately working for Barefoot Expeditions as rafting guide and safety kayaker. David also has some experience in biking and trekking. His main goal while working is to have fun together with the clients while keeping the group in a safe environment.
