Where to find Pink Dolphins in Ecuador Amazon Rainforest

We recently had a client who loves Amazon River pink dolphins and wishes to increase her chances of close encounters with these magnificent cetaceans. Here, we investigate how to make that happen.

The Pink Dolphin, a uniquely exclusive species to South America, is thought to have originated from a captivating theory. It is postulated that during the formation of the Andes Mountains, approximately six to ten million years ago, a group of oceanic dolphins became trapped on the East side of the Cordillera. Eventually, these dolphins adapted to their new environment in the Amazon Rainforest and transformed into the distinct Pink Dolphins that we know and recognize today.

Ecuador is a country that lies in the tropical region and, as such, experiences a tropical climate. The Amazon Rainforest is a major feature of the country, and it experiences a rainy season that lasts from December to June. During this period, the temperatures range from 23°C (73°F) to 30°C (86°F), with the hottest months being February and March. In April and May, there is a significant increase in rainfall, making it the wettest months of the rainy season. The amount of rainfall in the area decreases for the rest of the year, and the rivers’ flow from the Andes also diminishes. However, due to the location in the rainforest, rain is still expected during the dry season.

Amazon River dolphins are the most widespread river dolphins. They are present in six countries in South America: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela,

The Amazon river dolphin is located in most of the area’s aquatic habitats, including river basins, significant courses of rivers, canals, river tributaries, lakes, and at the ends of rapids and waterfalls. Cyclical changes in the water levels of rivers take place throughout the year. During the dry season, dolphins occupy the main river channels, and during the rainy season, they can move easily to smaller tributaries, forests, and floodplains.
