Cuenca: Ecuador’s Rising Star—and Why Now Is a Wonderful Time to Visit
Cuenca city

HAPPENING NOW · OCTOBER 30–NOVEMBER 3, 2026

Come for the fiestas. Stay for the city.

If Cuenca has been sitting on your “one day” list, this is a good moment to move it up. The November celebrations are already underway, bringing fairs, food festivals, and concerts to one of Ecuador’s most intriguing cities.

But leave some room between events. There is a different kind of pleasure in a long lunch, a conversation over coffee, or a walk beside the Tomebamba with no urgent appointment ahead.

At Barefoot Expeditions, we see Cuenca as a rising star on an Ecuador itinerary: a place to give a few days, a comfortable pair of shoes, and permission to change the afternoon’s plans.

The Athens of Ecuador, at your own pace

Cuenca’s UNESCO-listed historic centre is a beautiful place to begin. Spend time around Parque Calderón, look up at the architecture, and follow your curiosity toward a café, a cultural space, or the streets around El Vado.

Known as the “Athens of Ecuador” for its longstanding association with literature and the arts, Cuenca rewards a little curiosity. Add a museum, a bookshop, or an exhibition to your day—and check what is open before heading out.

Taste the season

Make room for colada morada and guaguas de pan, the traditional drink-and-bread pairing associated with Día de los Difuntos. Ask about the preparation and the story behind it. A simple food stop can become a memorable introduction to family traditions.

Celebration and remembrance share these dates. If you visit a cemetery or encounter a religious observance, follow local guidance and ask before photographing people.

Choose one celebration. Leave room for the unexpected conversation.

A local city with an international conversation

Cuenca has an established international resident community. English-speaking visitors can find local news through CuencaHighLife, community notices and activities on GringoPost, and English-language productions at Azuay Community Theater. Check current programmes and availability directly.

The community extends well beyond English-speaking retirees. INEC’s 2022 census summary identifies people from the United States as Cuenca’s second-largest foreign-resident group, accounting for 16.2% of foreign residents. That is a dated share—not a current population total or a percentage of all Cuencanos.

These international connections can help you find your feet. Still, some of the best encounters begin with a few words of Spanish, a neighborhood business, and an interest in the people who call Cuenca home.

Why Cuenca keeps attracting attention

Cuenca leads the cities listed in Numbeo’s 2026 South American Quality of Life Index , with a score of 151.0. World Travel Index’s January 2026 report also named it its top South American city.

These are platform rankings, rather than a formal wellness award. Numbeo uses data and voluntary surveys, so the results offer context—not a guarantee about every visitor’s experience. Our recommendation is to give Cuenca enough time to discover what you enjoy about it.

The small detail Diego noticed

Barefoot founder Diego remembers the city’s tidy appearance and the raised, folding metal racks used outside homes to hold rubbish bags for collection. EMAC documents this practical system, while noting that the historic centre follows different rules.

It is a small reminder that a city’s appeal also comes from everyday care. Ask your host how to separate and dispose of waste during your stay.

Two days in Cuenca, without the rush

Arrive the evening before if you can, then use this as a flexible starting point. Match the festival visit to your dates and check opening hours, walking distances, steps, and local access.

Time Day one Day two
Morning Historic centre and Parque Calderón. A gentle walk beside the Tomebamba on open paths.
Afternoon Lunch, then a selected fair or cultural stop. A food festival, gallery, or unhurried café visit.
Evening A concert that fits your dates. Dinner and time to enjoy your favorite corner.

A suggested travel rhythm, not a booked tour.

A few things that make the trip easier

  • Choose your base: ask about nighttime noise and vehicle access during the festivities.
  • Pack for variety: comfortable shoes, a rain layer, sun protection, and something warm for the evening.
  • Plan the return: confirm transport before a late concert and check for temporary street closures.
  • Leave room: one main event each day gives you time to enjoy the city around it.
